British Open Odds: Phil Mickelson Props

While Tiger Woods is still the official No. 1 player on the World Golf Rankings, pretty much any expert will tell you that the best player in the world right now is No. 2 Phil Mickelson, and Lefty can take over the top spot with a win this week in the British Open at St. Andrews.
But the British Open, one of two majors Mickelson hasn’t won, has given him fits with just one Top-10 finish in 16 career starts. He has missed three cuts and finished 40th or worse seven times. Whether Lefty can finish in the Top 10 this week at the Old Course is one prop offered on Bodog’s golf odds. He has played in the Open at St. Andrews three times, finishing T-40 (1995), T-11 (2000) and T60 (2005). Because of those results and the fact he hasn’t finished better than 19th since 2004, Mickelson is -225 to finish in the Top 10 and +165 to manage that feat.
Lefty says he likes his chance to win this week because St. Andrews is so wide open that it will allow him to use driver on nearly every hole and because the course, in general, favors players with good short games. And no one has a better short game than Mickelson. And he also has been terrific at majors this year, winning the Masters and finishing tied for 4th at the U.S. Open. Mickelson is the 16/1 second favorite on Bodog’s golf odds to win this week.
It might behoove you not to bet on Mickelson being the first-round leader, however – that option is 16/1. He has broken 70 just twice ever in the British Open’s opening rounds (he missed last year to be with his sick wife). However, he went across the pond well ahead of the Open Championship this year to get extra practice time.
